Amniocentesis

Sampling of amniotic fluid for prenatal diagnosis.

Amniocentesis: Overview

Amniocentesis is an established prenatal diagnostic procedure, typically performed between 15 and 22 weeks. Under ultrasound guidance, a very fine needle is passed through the abdominal wall into the uterus and a small amount of amniotic fluid is collected for genetic or other indicated laboratory analysis. When performed by experienced clinicians, genetic amniocentesis is generally a safe procedure.

How is the assessment planned?

Each procedure and follow-up plan is individualized by considering gestational age, the mother’s medical history, previous pregnancies, current ultrasound findings and any available screening results together.

This page is for general information only. Whether a procedure is indicated and its appropriate timing are determined through individual medical assessment.
